As I continue with my weight loss progression, I am amazed at how it does get easier. I have a lot of tools I am using to make this a success. You have to have tools because it is hard and without help, it is crazy!
Progression and transition
Losing weight has been a life long challenge. That means that gaining weight is an issue. I gain quickly. When you think you know how to eat right, you think, “I should be skinny, I eat right, I drink lots of water, I am active, so why is it such a struggle?” Yes we are all different. Our body types, our pheno types, our geno types all play a role in our weight. We can look at our relatives and get a good idea of why we look the way we do. At least partly. The other part is how we eat, what we eat, how we move, if we move, our workouts, our daily activity.
We can exercise all we want and that doesn’t mean we are going to have the body of a God. We can eat right and that doesn’t mean we are going to be healthy. It helps, but there are other factors that play into our health and fitness.
For me, as I watch the numbers on the scale drop (yeah me!) I realize that I can never go back to eating the way I used to. The older I get, the more I have to watch what I eat too. For example. I used to eat chips, and candy and junk. Well no wonder my weight started to go up. But when I was young, I could eat that way and maintain my weight because I was so active. But as I get older, I now see that I have to work harder on my diet because I sit behind a computer most of the day. When I am active it is in spurts and sporadic. I will get on the water and paddle board into an amazing canyon and then go for 2 or more weeks before I do it again. So it isn’t consistent. Therefore, I need to work on my weight loss progression to keep it consistent.
I don’t usually post photos of myself but felt it was important to make my point. I still have a long way to go, but I am proud of the progress I have made so far. This photo is from January 3rd to April 23rd of this year.
Diet and nutrition
Eating more not to live and not living to eat. You may have heard this before. But the older you get, the more you have to make this a reality. So for my diet, I have to count calories. If I don’t, I end up eating more then I need. Notice I said need? Yep, I have to look at food and ask myself, do I need this? Will this feed and fuel my body? Or is it something I just want? Now don’t get me wrong, sometimes I gift myself a treat. It is good to reward yourself from time to time. But this doesn’t mean daily or even weekly. It means that maybe once or twice a month I will have something not on my diet.
Nutrition is huge now. I realize that I need more protein and nutrients than ever before. Fueling the brain, the muscles that I am trying to change, and getting the nutrients that my bones need. This is more important now than it has ever been. The older we get, the more we need to take care of our bodies to keep them healthy and strong.
Changing the way you view food
Eating fuel has helped me realized that is the type of food I need to consume. Putting fuel into my body gives me the power to get through my day. It isn’t just filler anymore. Things like pasta, and breads or unhealthy fats such as red meat and bacon aren’t really getting me the feelings that I want. When I eat those things, I feel lethargic, slower and sleepy. My body is struggling to utilize these foods and ends up storing them as fat because it isn’t what my body needs.
When I eat a salad without dressing, or lightly steamed greens which are easier to consume and breakdown in your body, I actually feel better. Lean proteins such as skinless chicken breast, or fish are fueling your body with a protein that can be broken down and assimilated and utilized as fuel.
Learning what works best for your body is a plus. There is a lot of information out there about blood types and how you can eat better for your blood type. Eating this way can help with weight loss progression and help you feel great.
Make YOU a priority.
Make YOU a priority in your life. We spend so much time helping others, working for others, doing things for others and we let ourselves go. We need to start working FOR ourselves. It could literally mean our lives.
Give yourself permission to heal your gut, or heal your heart, or brain. Give yourself permission to help yourself get better. Change the way you see working out, look at it as a gift to your cardiovascular system. Use it to gift yourself a break from the mundane day to day activities. Change the way you view food. Eat to live. Eat to fuel your body and mind verses living to eat.
Give yourself the gift of life by taking your youth back and get healthy. Life is long, it is so much better when you feel good and enjoy your ride going through it. Look for ways to commit random acts of kindness and helping others by helping yourself to get healthy. You never know who you can effect by your actions. I hope you found this blog post helpful and I would love to hear from you. I am a learner, I love learning from others.
